Well summer has certainly arrived (even for the Melbournians) and undoubtedly we all slowly trying to focus on getting that little bit healthier and that little bit fitter. I mean who doesn’t want to feel great before entering the festive activities? So, this week check out our new recipe which is a an absolute show stopper for feeling great this summer.
on the exercise front, we have decided to turn to someone who also understand that exercise and community go hand in hand. A gracious interview with a well-known entrepreneur who has put his heart and soul into making one of the best fitness studios in Melbourne come to life- Kaya Health Clubs.
We collaborated with Christian and the team at Kaya a couple of months ago and the way we would describe them is positive, humble and passionate.
Here is a little insight into Christian and how he has built an inspiring fitness world just for you!
Please tell us what you do & when you began?
I am founder/co-founder of Kaya Health Clubs and we opened our very first fitness studio in Prahan, November 2012 and Emporium in August 2015.
How did you start? What were the big milestones?
I got into the industry in 2003- prior to this I was in Senior Management in Retail. Leading and managing teams can be quite stressful which lead me to exercise. Exercise reduces stress levels.
What was the toughest part of the journey?
Initially believing in myself and my wife without diluting what we wanted to create.
Right now we are still growing. I am coming to the realisation that I want to please everyone but unfortunately I can’t always do this. You also have to be on 24/7 when it’s your own business.
How would you describe your business to someone who has never been?
The one stop health and wellness destination. Specialised classes. Unlimited access to classes to our members. Home away from home and enjoyable.
We try to treat each member as a member rather than a number and keep a really positive environment.
Did you always know this would be your career?
Not at all. I always knew it would be a business of some sort. When I was younger I would always play shops and have imaginary customers.
I also wanted to be a Doctor to help people.
What top 3 things contribute to the success of your business?
- Our people
- The Community and our members- they are quite open and vocal which is great as we always take on constructive feedback.
- Brought something to market that is affordable/convenient and has variety
What inspires you the most to do what you do?
The team that we have and being in a positive environment. I have friends that are lawyers and there is not positivity in their day to day.
What advice would you give your 18year old self?
- To believe and be patient
- Being able to trust in timing
- Things happen for a reason
Have you had a mentor or someone who has inspired you?
Previous business partner and boss. More from a people point of view- getting the best out of people.

What is your go to breakfast?
I am pretty boring/straight forward. Eggs (hard boiled) or yoghurt with muesli
Do you have any nutritional advice you swear by?
Sleep when possible and exercise

Do you have any morning time saving tips for juggling a busy schedule, eating well, and staying healthy?
Planning- there is not a day I don’t plan. I plan the next day before bed.
To someone that hasn’t been to Kaya what’s the best class or way for them to start? What should they try?
Any of our classes. Vinyassa, spinning, pilates or yoga. Our teachers are trained for all levels- come and let them know you are new.

Now…if you want to hit it that little bit harder and burn those few extra calories, these classes are recommended so give them a try STAT!
Fitness Circuit-High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) style classes with multiple stations incorporating a mix of body weight and weights based exercises. Class length is 50 minutes and 60 minutes.
Boxing classes – HIIT, but with a focus on boxing – punching and pad work mixed with intervals of body weight exercises like sprints, skipping and other cardiovascular training. Class length 45 minutes.
Spinning©- A form of exercise for cardiovascular benefits and weight loss. Set to motivating music in a fun, group environment, Spinning© classes are a 45 minute bike race incorporating hills, ‘jumps’ and sprints and are great for weight loss and fat burning.
